1964 PIRATES OF PENZANCE

(The Programme is below the photos.)

“In the Sixth form the choir did a joint performance of The Pirates of Penzance at the Civic Theatre with boys from The Modern. It was an innovative move and exciting for those of us involved. Rehearsals were after school hours and each girl was allocated her pirate. However, when the first of the three performances took place, things had changed, and the scripted screams were genuine as we each had a different pirate from the rehearsals! ” Jane McConomy ’59-’65

“We took over the Civic Theatre, and so had 'proper' dressing rooms and a 'proper' stage and lighting, also 'proper' hired costumes. And, of course, the boys from the Mod were involved! There's a particular line during the last act which always got a guffaw from the lads during rehearsals. The heroine, Mabel, calls on the hero to rescue her from the pirates and the (sung) response is 'Beautiful Mabel, I would if I could but I am not able'. I could never understand what was funny about that... (think I've worked it out since!)” Elisabeth Stephenson ’59-’66
